Shri Sati Godavari Mataji

Biography

Shri Sati Godavari Mataji

Pujya Godavari Mataji was born in the holy town Shegaon on 24th December 1914. It was in the year 1923. Godavari a small village girl of the age of 9 years came to visit Sakuri along with her parents, Shri Baburao and Sau. Ramabai from Shegaon. Shegaon is a famous town in Maharashtra where the Samadhi of Shri Gajanan Maharaj is situated.

Shri Upasani Baba was not only an ascetic but he was also a reformer par excellence much ahead of the customs and social way of life prevailing during his time. It was with single minded zeal and stubbornness that he undertook to keep in his Ashram. Kanyas who would be capable enough to become his shishyas, Pujya Mataji was one of them at her tender age of 9 years but she was told by Shri Upasani Baba that she would be the one who would look after the Ashram in future. Thus was born an institution where young Kanyas were accepted as shishyas to learn Vedas and Shastras in pure chaste Sanskrit language under the strict guidance of Shri Upasani Baba and also follow an ascetic life as Brahmacharinis or Kanyas as they are called.

The Kanyas who belong to different parts of India have been taught not only to live an ascetic life but also to learn the Sanskrit language so as to be able to chant vedic hymns and perform all Yagnyas and Satkarmas relating to all the Hindu Gods such as Lords Krishna, Rama, Shiva, Ganapati, Hanuman, Dattatreya, Khandoba, Shani and Kanyakumari Devi. The teaching is so complete and perfect that it encompasses the learning of arts and crafts of daily life including music, drawings etc.

It is with this background that all kanyas presently numbering 45 have continued to live under one roof and under strict guidance of PUJYA GODAVARI MATAJI who succeeded over the Gadi of Shri Upasani Baba Maharaj up to the age of 76 years. During this period, she helped Kanyas and numerous devotees with spiritual guidance. She wrote many Bhajans (hymns) and travelled a lot spreading the threads of Shri Upasani Baba's teaching and true Hindu philosophy.

Pujya Godavari Mataji left the body of her own sweet will on 11th August 1990.
